With the secondary choir, it consists mainly of the lower secondary students whereby musicianship is developed further through choir singing, rhythm tapping as well as opportunities to perform. Students are given the opportunity to grow in their knowledge of music through exploring different genres of music as part of music appreciation. The music programme at KIS is a well-rounded one; with the focus on listening, performing and composing. Performance opportunities are all year round and it is open to all students of KIS.

South Island School’s student musicians have been practising both at home and during a limited number of in-school rehearsals to bring you a range of jazz numbers and choral highlights that represent a taste of the music groups running at SIS.

The SIS Chamber Choir will be performing Daniel Elder’s arrangement of “Little Star” and the world premiere of Lelya Lenda”, translated from Elvish to English as ‘Carry on the Journey’ by SIS Head of Music, Simmone Bundy, which seeks to give hope in the current global turbulence.

Ensemble/Orchestra

The string ensemble at AISHK is a very young group of talented musicians with ages ranging from 8 to 15. Like many schools, having had over 18 months of little or no face to face rehearsals, it has been a relief to be able to start again. The string ensemble rehearse once a week at 7am on a Wednesday morning. They made their debut with a video recorded concert for our school showcase in June of this year performing the 1st movement of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and had the honour a few months later to be the supporting orchestra from one of our year 12 students performing the Romance – Larghetto from Mozart’s Horn Concert in Eb Major. With 21 players which span a wide range of abilities, they enjoy challenge and the chance to perform together.

GAON orchestra is a youth orchestra founded with the mission to give a message of hope through music. GAON debuted on the stage hosted by HKTDC in May of 2021 and performed at the 72nd-anniversary of the Korean national day celebration with a video.

The orchestra aims to help make a balanced world with our harmony. Further fundraising and charity music performances are planned. Gaon Orchestra will grow to help young Koreans living in Hong Kong live with pride of Korea and become a place for communication for Korean students attending various schools. In addition, they will strive to become an orchestra that serves as a bridge to promote Korean culture to Hong Kong through various, high-quality performances such as performing cultural exchanges between chambers and official events.

The Hongkong Hanmaum Samulnori was founded in 2002 by Father Beo. Currently, it is run by the councils that closely work with the students and the teachers. This foundation brings out the existence of Korean culture to those living in Hong Kong. Also, they are working on volunteering and performing to Hong Kong local people to make them aware of Korean culture.

First off, if we look at our clothing, we would see a colorful assortment of belts; blue, red, and yellow. The blue resembles the sky, yellow as the earth, and red symbolizes people. This tells us that the connection between the sky and the earth is people.

We consist of 4 instruments; 징(Jing -gong), 꽹과리(kkwaenggwari-small gong), 장구(janggu), 북(drum). The Jing and kkwaenggwari represent the sky’s coarse personality and the janggu and the drum represent the softness of the earth. The kkwaenggwari sounds like a thunderstorm, therefore, it’s called a thunderbolt and sits at the front. The jing represents the sound of the wind, corresponding with its name ‘풍백'(puongbeak). When you listen to the book you can visualize clouds floating around, and it is named quite coincidentally ‘운서’(yonseo).
