A local grammar school with an international outlook, Diocesan Girls’ School was founded in 1860 by the Anglican (Episcopalian) Church to provide an excellent all-rounded secondary education for girls in Hong Kong. Besides the pursuit of academic excellence, the school also places strong emphasis on building a strong sensitivity towards beauty in our students, thus encompassing music making and art appreciation for aesthetic enjoyment. Western instrumentalists from Secondary 1 to 6 (equivalent to Grades 7 to 12) make up the three large ensembles: the Concert Band, String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, these ensembles have achieved first places in various local schools’ music festivals. The Diocesan Girls’ School Symphony Orchestra has performed in Shenzhen and Macao, as well as various cities in Taiwan, receiving high acclaims for the many collaborative performances with local secondary schools. The Orchestra finished its 2014-15 season in July with a celebration concert held in the DGS Auditorium. In addition to the five performances by winners of the DGS Concerto Competition that were reviewed in the South China Morning Post, the Orchestra also performed with the school dance team on a new choreography of Ravel!&s Bolero by renowned dancer and choreographer, Mui Cheuk-yin. The Orchestra is currently under the direction of Mr. Leung Kin Fung, founder of Hong Kong Pure Strings and First Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
