HKGNA MUSIC FESTIVAL 2021


HKGNA is proud to present our 8th Music Festival with the theme “An Ode to Hope and Resilience” from November 1 – 30, 2021. This year will showcase a spectacular series of concerts and music events featuring renowned international guest artists performing with Hong Kong’s preeminent virtuosos and HKGNA’s own rising stars.

HKGNA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION 2021
Kicking off this year’s festival will be the 4th edition of our HKGNA International Music Competition 2021. HKGNA has proudly awarded and presented our past Competition Grand Prize winners with NY Debut concert performances at Carnegie Hall in 2010, 2015 and 2017. In 2017, our winners performed to a sold out concert audience at Carnegie Hall in a 20th Anniversary of HKSAR celebratory concert, supported by the Hong Kong Economic Trading Office New York. For this year’s HKGNA International Music Competition, we have expanded the categories to piano, strings and chamber music, and will be offering financial assistance to applicants who are underprivileged. For the very first time, we are opening our competition to overseas applicants and who can audition virtually.

Competition winners will receive cash prizes from our title sponsor Yang Won Sun Foundation. Hong Kong Grand Prize Winner will be awarded the opportunity to perform overseas and International Grand Prize Winner the opportunity to perform in a Hong Kong Debut Concert. The final round for Hong Kong applicants will be held on November 24 at the Y Theatre, Youth Square.

OPENING CONCERT – VIOLINIST ZIA SHIN WITH HK’S CELEBRATED ARTISTS
HKGNA Music Festival 2021 Opening Concert will proudly feature Superstar Korean Violinist Zia Shin. An international virtuoso, Ms. Shin has won top prizes in major international competitions including the Long-Thibaud, Queen Elisabeth and Tchaikovsky competitions, just to name a few. She will be performing together with Hong Kong’s celebrated artists HK Phil Cello Principal Richard Bamping and HKGNA Music Competition 2010 First Prize Winner Pianist Xingji Piao. This concert will be on November 1 at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall. HKGNA co-presents this event with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong in partnership with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

CHAMBER CONCERT- VIOLINIST JING WANG AND RISING STARS 
We are thrilled to present the HKGNA Chamber Concert with HK Phil Concertmaster Jing Wang and Hong Kong’s Rising Stars featuring HKGNA Music Competition 2016 Grand Prize Winner Pianist Wong Sze Yuen, Violinist Zheng Yang, Violist Chris Choi, Cellist Nan Jia, British Cellist Ian Mok, and Mezzo-soprano Ashley Chui on November 7 at JC Cube, Tai Kwun.

“MUSIC FOR GEN-NEXT” CONCERT
True to our mission to nurture and inspire our best young Hong Kong Artists, we will also present our “Music for Gen-Next” Concert, a musical collaboration with Hong Kong’s top local and international schools on November 18 at Y Theatre, Youth Square. HKGNA co-presents this event with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong.

HKGNA CHARITY CONCERT 2021 – PIANIST MICHELLE KIM WITH SAR PHILHARMONIC
Hong Kong Generation Next Arts (HKGNA) Founder & Artistic Director, Pianist Michelle Kim will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 with the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra on November 21 at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall in a fundraising concert for HKGNA. Celebrating the majestic sounds of Beethoven in this special concert event with donations going to HKGNA’s Musical Angels program to continue creating performance opportunities for our Hong Kong young artists and to support next year’s music festival.

FINALE CONCERT – “AN ODE TO HOPE AND RESILIENCE”
Finally, as part of our Musical Angel Program, we are proud to co-present with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong Award-winning young virtuoso Violinist Ji-Sun Kim in her Hong Kong Debut performance with the Finale Concert Youth Orchestra under the direction of Conductor Andrew Ling and Felix Shuen in collaboration with Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK) for our Finale Concert.

Ji-Sun will perform with HK’s best artists together with HK Phil Viola Principal Andrew Ling and HKGNA Founder Pianist Michelle Kim. We are also excited to feature Tenor Felix Shuen, Soprano Ada Pong, Violinist Andy Yeung, Flutist Chloe Leung, Pianist Malcolm Mok, HKGNA/ADA Musical Angel Pianist Lee Shing, and ADA Angel Soprano Michelle Siu on November 28 at Hong Kong Jockey Club Amphitheatre, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

True to our mission to nurture and inspire our best young Hong Kong Artists, we will also present our “Music for Gen-Next” Concert, a musical collaboration with Korean International School, Australian International School Hong Kong, ESF South Island School, Chinese YMCA College, Gaon Orchestra and Hong Kong Hanmaum Samulnori to perform samulnori, strings ensemble, jazz, K-pop and chorus in Mandarin, Korean and English. Hong Kong singer Emily Yuen, the champion of “Korean Cultural Center K-pop Stage For You 2020”, and Saga Dance Crew members will sing and Dance K-pop singer IU’s songs to mark the show ending.
